Traditional Pot Lyonnais – 46 cl Capacity

In Lyon, it is said that the Pot Lyonnais was born from a little trick devised by the canuts’ employers.

At the time, Lyon’s workers traditionally received a ration of wine. But some employers are said to have looked for a way not to completely fill a 50 cl pot, while still giving the impression that they had.

The trick was simple: keep exactly the same shape and size as the 50 cl Pot Beaujolais, but make the bottom of the glass thicker. The result: 4 cl less in the pot, without it being noticeable at first glance.

And so, the famous 46 cl Pot Lyonnais is said to have been born.

A true story or a charming legend from a Lyon's bouchon? It is difficult to say. But this small 4 cl difference is now one of the well-known features of the Pot Lyonnais.

And when you place a Pot Lyonnais and a Pot Beaujolais side by side, you have to look closely at the bottom to understand where those famous 4 cl have gone.

Sold empty, so you can fill it with whichever drink you like.
