Traditional Pot Lyonnais – 46 cl capacity
Traditional Lyonnais pot – 46 cl capacity
In Lyon, legend says the Lyonnais pot began as a clever trick by the canuts’ bosses.
At the time, Lyon’s workers traditionally received a ration of wine. But some employers are said to have looked for a way to avoid filling a 50 cl glass completely while making it look full.
The trick was simple: keep exactly the same shape and size as the 50 cl Beaujolais pot, but make the base of the glass thicker. The result: 4 cl less in the glass, without being noticeable at first glance.
This is how the 46 cl Lyonnais pot is said to have begun.
Fact or charming Lyon bouchon legend? It is hard to say. But this small 4 cl difference is now one of the best-known features of the Lyonnais pot.
And when you place a Lyonnais pot next to a Beaujolais pot, look carefully at the base to see where those famous 4 cl have gone.
Sold empty, ready for you to fill with the drink of your choice.
